Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of May 2015 "ALS Awareness Month" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the ALS Association Western Pennsylvania Chapter provides services and resources to persons living with ALS, their families, and caregivers in 31 counties in Central and Western Pennsylvania; and,
 
WHEREAS, May is ALS Awareness Month, a chance to increase awareness about the disease and raise funds for patient support and promising scientific research; and,
 
WHEREAS, even with the incredible success of last year's Ice Bucket Challenge, tremendous work remains to be done to address the unmet medical needs of the 400+ people living with ALS in our community; and,
 
WHEREAS, in recognition of ALS Awareness Month, the ALS Association is starting the "Challenge ALS" campaign, which will be asking the public to challenge ALS in their own personal way either by participating, advocating, or donating; and,
 
WHEREAS, in recognition of ALS Awareness Month, the ALS Association Western PA Chapter is hosting a special evening with Nancy Frates, whose son Pete is credited with starting the viral social movement called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge; and,
 
WHEREAS, on Thursday, May 21st, Nancy will speak on how the Ice Bucket Challenge impacted her own life, how her son lives with ALS, and what the Ice Bucket Challenge has been able to do for others living with ALS.
