WHEREAS, the 2015 Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community Pittsburgh takes place Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Stage AE on the North Shore and, after the walk, food, entertainment, activities for children and prizes will be provided; and,
WHEREAS, since the first walk in 2003, the events have raised more than $7.8 million for 250-plus nonprofit organizations across the states while helping community members become or stay physically active; and,
WHEREAS, 100 percent of the money raised by walkers during the annual fundraising event benefits local health and human service agencies; and,
WHEREAS, this year's walk will benefit 75 health and human service organizations; one of which is the National Parkinson Foundation Western PA; and,
WHEREAS, approximately 60,000 people in the United States are newly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease each year, which currently has no cure; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby encourage residents to join Highmark and walk for a healthy community on May 16; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, May 5, 2015, to be "Walk for a Healthy Community Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
