Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh honors and appreciates the Women's Law Project's work in Pittsburgh and across the state. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, May 1st, 2015, to be "Women's Health and Equality Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Women's Law Project joined the fight for women's rights in 1974, founded by a group of feminist attorneys devoted to equality and justice. Emboldened by the resurgent feminist movement of the 1970s, they won national recognition for their trailblazing Equal Rights Amendment Project, combining extensive litigation under state ERAs with public education; and,

WHEREAS, the Women's Law Project follows a mission to create a more just and equitable society by advancing the rights and status of all women throughout their lives by engaging in high-impact litigation, advocacy, and education; and,

WHEREAS, the Women's Law Project follows the mantra of "Safeguarding Rights, Creating Opportunities for Women Throughout Their Lives," and has brought this concept to reality through cases that protected women's reproductive freedom; challenged sex discrimination in employment, education, athletics, and insurance; advanced the rights of lesbian and gay parents; advocated on behalf of impoverished women; worked for fair and accessible procedures in child custody, child support, and protection from abuse actions; and championed the rights of sexual assault survivors; and,

WHEREAS, on a daily basis, the Women's Law Project attorneys troubleshoot for Pennsylvania clinics, hospitals, doctors, patient advocates, and women seeking access to reproductive health care and education; and,

WHEREAS, the Women's Law Project works to improve the status of women in Pennsylvania by engaging them in the political process through their initiative, WomenVote PA, which focuses on increasing women's civic participation in Pennsylvania through nonpartisan voter registration and voter turnout efforts, and conducting workshops and training sessions to provide women and men with the skills needed to speak with their legislators about issues affecting their families; and,
