WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., established in 1908 by nine black female college scholars at Howard University, is America's first and oldest Greek-letter organization established by and for African American college women, now counting over 265,000 members in 986 chapters across 96 regions; and,
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. works to address critical community needs through its programs in five target areas: Educational Enrichment, Health Promotion, Family Strengthening, Environmental Ownership, and Global Impact; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh will serve as host city to the 84th Great Lakes Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., with the event taking place at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and Westin Convention Center Hotel on April 8-12, 2015, bringing together several thousand African American women in leadership and showcasing a city reinvigorated and bustling in industry, technology and higher education; and,
WHEREAS, special recognition should be paid to Toni S. Kendrick, a former principal and educator with the Pittsburgh Public Schools, who now serves as the Great Lakes Regional Director, with jurisdiction over Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, Western New York and Western Pennsylvania; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby welcome all members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to Pittsburgh, congratulates the sorority on its multitude of civic programs and services that have positively impacted countless lives, and wishes the Regional Conference much success; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Wednesday, April 8th 2015 to be Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
