WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh has a long-standing partnership with local amateur boxing gyms, and has supported them by providing facilities in which young Pittsburghers can train and compete, including Dilworth Park, the Overbrook Firehouse, Brookline Recreation Center, Ormsby Recreation Center, and the #53 Firehouse in Spring Hill; and,
WHEREAS, these organizations provide an opportunity for at-risk youth to improve their physical fitness, and discipline through the sport of boxing; and,
WHEREAS, a committee of local leaders from organized labor, business, and the Irish community has partnered with local boxing gyms in the City of Pittsburgh to organize the Pittsburgh Building Trades Donnybrook, in honor of St. Patrick's Day. This unique boxing competition raises money to empower young people, locally and in Ireland, through sports, and helps raise awareness of the ongoing hostility between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland; and,
WHEREAS, the second annual Pittsburgh Donnybrook, held on Tuesday, March 17th, at the Priory Grand Hall on Pittsburgh's North Side, will feature Irish Olympic Boxing Champion, Michael Carruth, who will lead the Dublin-based Drimnagh boxing club in a sixteen-bout card against local Pittsburgh fighters. Led by Jack Mook, a decorated war hero, Pittsburgh Police officer, and director of the Steel City Boxing Gym located in the old #53 Firehouse on Spring Hill, the Pittsburgh team will look to defend its title. At stake, is the coveted Ambassador's Cup, a seventy pound trophy that has remained in Pittsburgh since the team's victory last year; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes the Pittsburgh Building Trades, the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh, and the Hibernian Celtic Athletic Fund, for organizing the 2nd annual Pittsburgh Donnybrook, and wishes both the Irish and Pittsburgh teams good luck; and,
