Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Schenley Park Skating Rink as a treasured Pittsburgh landmark which has created special memories for all who have visited the facility since 1975 and congratulates Citiparks and the staff at the Schenley Park Skating Rink for 40 successful years; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, January 25 , 2015, to be " SCHENLEY PARK SKATING RINK 40th ANNIVERSARY DAY " in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Schenley Park, 456 acres of beautiful land created in 1889 from a donation to the city by heiress Mary Schenley, is the second largest municipal park in the city of Pittsburgh. Bordering CMU, the University of Pittsburgh and Phipps Conservatory , it has the Bob O'Connor Golf Course, the Schenley Park Caf? and Visitor Center, Schenley Plaza and the Schenley Oval Sportsplex within its borders; and,

WHEREAS, once sporting amenities like the Panther Hollow Boathouse, a horse racing track, a nature museum, Memorial Fountains, an indoor hockey rink, a band shell and a 3500 seat theater, today Schenley Park is known for its tennis courts, running tracks, picnic venues and shelters , Anderson Bridge and Playground and the Schenley Park Skating Rink ; and,

WHEREAS, one of the most desirable destinations in the city of Pittsburgh is the Schenley Park Skating Rink, located in a scenic tree-lined setting within one of the city's premier recreation areas. The Schenley Park Skating Rink has provided recreational activities for the residents of the City of Pittsburgh since its opening in the Winter of 1975; and,

WHEREAS, thousands of children have enjoyed instruction in ice skating and hockey over the years at the only regulation-size outdoor skating rink in the City of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS; the rink has hosted a wide variety of annual special events such as the "Mascot Skate", "Valentines on Ice", and "Skate with Santa" and has partnered with numerous agencies including Pittsburgh Figure Skating Club, Pittsburgh Curling Club, Big Brothers and Sisters and Venture Outdoors. The rink has served as a treasured community resource for countless organizations and served as the site of year round activities such as miniature golf, summer soul line dancing and summer day camps.
