WHEREAS, Elizabeth Pittinger was a Commissioner with the Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations from April 1994 to November 18, 2014, serving as Commission Chairperson from 1999 to 2000; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Pittinger is a dedicated community member and role model, with an extensive career in human services and civil rights. Ms. Pittinger began her career focusing on the promotion of civil rights for people with disabilities. She has served on the Pennsylvania Right to Education Task Force, which was charged with monitoring the implementation of the first public education mandate for children with intellectual disabilities, and was appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve on the President's Committee on Mental Retardation (now the President's Committee on People with Intellectual Disabilities) from 1994 to 2001. Ms. Pittinger has received several awards and commendations, including recognition as a “Woman of Justice” by the Women and Girls Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Pittinger has been a leader and dedicated public servant in her work as Commissioner with the Commission on Human Relation, aiding in endeavoring to ensure fair and equal access to all persons who work, live, and visit the City of Pittsburgh. She continues to promote civil rights in her longtime Executive Director position with the Citizen's Police Review Board; an independent agency within the City of Pittsburgh established to investigate citizen complaints about improper conduct by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize, congratulate, and humbly thank Elizabeth Pittinger for her more than 20 years of dedicated service with the Commission on Human Relations, allowing us to pull on her wisdom, knowledge and experience for the betterment of the Commission and the people of Pittsburgh. We wish her peace, prosperity and good success throughout her life.
