Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby acknowledges the centennial celebration of St. Norbert's Parish; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council hereby declares Monday, December 15 2014, “St. Norbert's Centennial Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

Whereas, On December 2, 1914, Reverend Regis Canevin granted permission to establish a parish in Overbrook, then known as Fairhaven, and;

Whereas, The first Mass in the new parish was said on January 1, 1915, and in March 1916, Father John Mader was appointed pastor, and the patronal name of Saint Norbert was chosen for the new parish consisting of 150 families, and;

Whereas, St. Norbert's parish has implemented and maintained community support programs like various blood drives, the Giving Tree, visiting the sick and attending funerals to honor the memories of parishioners who have passed on, and;

Whereas, Fellowship in the church has been stoked over the years through fun and festive church activities and performances, such as the ''Kitchen Symfunny,'' composed of St. Norbert Ladies Guild members who sang while playing instruments they built themselves with spoons, pots, pans, washboards, and other kitchen items, and;

Whereas, the community of the parish of St. Norbert's is described by parishioners as, “Like a second family,” and “hardworking, spiritual, prayerful and supportive”, and;

Whereas, Regis Farmer, Richard Tusky, Thomas Burke, and Michael Conway are just four of the many ordained priests who grew up at St. Norbert's, and;

Whereas, St. Norbert, St. Basil, St. Albert the Great, and St. Wendolyn have come together to be the Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh, led by Father Steve Kresak and Father Mike Roche, and;

Whereas, Since forming this alliance, the parishioners have grown their community of extended family and combined newsletter efforts to educate each parish community, and;

Whereas, for the past century, St. Norbert's pastors and parishioners have created a faith-based community focused on a family-like atmosphere with a current parish membership of 550 families, 1,185 parishioners, and;

Whereas, St. Norbert continues to be a valuable community asset and touchstone for Overbrook and the broader South Pittsburg...
