Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and celebrate the work of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Division of Surgical Oncology, and hereby designates Thursday, November 20th, 2014 to be Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the month of November is National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and serves as a time for special reflection on a very serious health concern effecting our community; and,
 
WHEREAS, in 2014 pancreatic cancer will effect over 46,000 individuals in the United States alone and has the worst survival rate of all types of cancers, with only 3% of effected people surviving 5 years after diagnosis, a statistic which has not changed for nearly 40 years; and,
 
WHEREAS, in our community an important part of the fight against this disease is being led by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Division of Surgical Oncology, which is uniquely committed to excellent patient care, treatment and advanced cancer research; and,
 
WHEREAS, at this reflective time of year it is especially important to recognize the individual efforts of Drs. Melissa Hogg, Herbert Zeh, and Amer Zureikat, team physicians of the UPMC Pancreatic Cancer Center, on their selfless and stalwart commitment to clinical and research efforts in treating patients with pancreatic cancer; and,
 
WHEREAS, during this National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month it is also vital to recognize all of the patients in the City of Pittsburgh who are diagnosed and currently fighting pancreatic cancer and to remember all of those who have lost their fight;
