Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor Matthew Onyshko, his wife Jess, and his daughters, Kendall and Makenna for their courage and strength in the face of adversity; his fellow firefighters at the Deutschtown Engine & Truck Company 32 for their dedication to the welfare of Matthew, his family and all city residents in their times of need; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare November 18, 2014, to be “Deutschtown Engine & Truck Company 32 Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, two years ago, Matthew Onyshko, his wife Jess, and their two daughters, Kendell and Makenna were confronted with the difficult news that Matthew had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (“ALS”), better known as Lou Gerhig's Disease; and,

WHEREAS, Matthew is an eight year veteran firefighter with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, stationed at the Deutschtown Engine & Truck Company 32 and, who on a daily basis, along with his fellow firefighters, served the People of Pittsburgh with bravery and dedication, protecting the safety and property of city residents; and,

WHEREAS, in response to his debilitating disease that prevented him from being able to physically perform his duties, Matthew's fellow firefighters have acted selflessly to ensure that Matthew and his family are provided for by working countless shifts in his place without additional pay. Pittsburgh firefighters devotedly 'fought' to work the extra shifts for Matthew to ensure that he and his family continued to receive a paycheck, while the residents of the City of Pittsburgh still received outstanding service and protection; and,

WHEREAS, despite his illness, Matthew has displayed personal courage and bravery by sustaining a positive outlook during his difficult battle with ALS, serving as an inspiration to his family, his friends, his fellow firefighters and, others diagnosed with ALS. Conversely, his fellow firefighters provide an example to us all as to how we should respond to our friends, neighbors and family in their times of need - you help in any way you can, you do so without care for reward and, that love, friendship, and loyalty - above all - is what counts most in our lives; and,

WHEREAS, On October 3, 2014, Matthew's story was featured on the internationally televised program Ellen, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, bringing attention to over three million viewers this heartwarming story of personal bravery, camaraderie and, how people care for one another ...
