Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and celebrate the work and effort of Shaimma and Nermine in empowering the women of their communities and thanks all of the important organizations involved with hosting them in our great City; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, Oct. 28st 2014 to be “Hands Along the Nile Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Hands Along the Nile Development Services is an American 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that is committed to building bridges between the people of Egypt and the United States, in addition to providing programs of exchange and dialogue aimed at bringing socioeconomic stability to Egyptian communities; and,

WHEREAS, Egypt is one of the largest and the most influential countries in the Middle East which faces numerous social and economic challenges to progress and to a peaceful, prosperous future, and a key to bringing stability to any community is empowering people to tackle their own problems through participatory decision-making and responsible self-governance; and,

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania Women Work and Pittsburgh Community Services Inc. are hosting two women entrepreneurs from Egypt, Shaimaa Meligy, Acting Director, ETP Woodworking and Furniture and Nermine Habib, Operations Manager, Beit al Karma Consulting from October 13-31st as part of a program sponsored by Hands Over the Nile in order to help develop their skills as female entrepreneurs and business leaders; and,

WHEREAS, Shaimaa is the Acting Director of a technical and vocational training partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of Education focusing on workforce development and raising the skill levels of blue collar workers, including women, working also on a program to train women to take on traditionally male professions, and is also the cofounder of an NGO that focuses on vocational training for women; and,

WHEREAS, Nermine is an Operations Manager and Field Researcher at Beit al Karma Consulting, one of the largest and most well-known consulting firms in Egypt which supports NGOs, and in her spare time volunteers in a program supporting underprivileged youth in Cairo, teaching literacy and life skills; and,
