Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends and celebrates the efforts of the Homeless Children's Education Fund and joins them in commemorating Homeless Children's Awareness Week; and, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 19th to 26th, 2014 to be Homeless Children's Awareness Week in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Homeless Children's Education Fund was established to serve as an advocate for the homeless youth of Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh, and to provide homeless children with access to a free, high quality, public education; and,

WHEREAS, the HCEF manages Learning Centers and Resource Libraries at 15 shelters throughout the city and county, working to provide homeless children with a comfortable and safe environment in which to learn and express their creativity; and,

WHEREAS, the HCEF's “mini-grant” program has provided homeless sheltering organizations with the opportunity to sponsor educational enrichment events and field trips for Allegheny County's underprivileged Youth-creating opportunities for active learning, stress reduction, and family bonding; and,

WHEREAS in order to focus the attention of the Pittsburgh region on the amazing work of the HCEF and to bring to the forefront the serious issues that the HCEF works tirelessly to solve, the week of October 19th to October 26th, 2014 has been designated Homeless Children's Awareness Week; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh local events of Homeless Children's Awareness Week, including the Hundred Acres Manor scare house, Bhangra in the Burgh, Hugh Schows at Eide's, and HEN Summit V will donate a generous portion of their proceeds to the efforts of the HCEF; and,

WHEREAS, the Awareness Week will also include numerous other community events such as An Evening of Storytelling at the Arcade Comedy Theater, various Stand Up for Homeless Children art installations at Duquesne Univeristy, the University of Pittsburgh, and BNY Mellon, and culminates in the Stand Up & Run for Homeless Children 5k/10k walk/run at North Park on Sunday, October 26th, 2014;
