Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 14, 2014 to be “Bidwell United Presbyterian Church Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, On Sunday, October 25, 1914, sixteen people withdrew from the Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church to establish their own worship community that would remain true to the biblical instruction, “My house shall be a house of prayer for all people; and,

WHEREAS, Over the years, Bidwell United Presbyterian Church has extensively been involved in the Civil Rights Movement, participation with Integration Partnerships and experiments, hosted gang peace summits, and has engaged in political and national issues throughout the last two decades; and,

WHEREAS, Some of the organizations seeded from the work of Bidwell United Presbyterian Church include: the Manchester Youth Development Center, which is an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, families, and communities; The Manchester Academic Charter School; and the Manchester Bidwell Corporation, which the renowned Manchester Craftsmen's Guild was created; and

WHEREAS, Bidwell United Presbyterian Church's ministry to the community has included: the initiation of a hospice program targeting African American families; holding Interfaith Community Memorial Services to help bring the neighborhood and community together; conducting the program “Camp Healing Hearts”, which is a one day summer camp for grieving children; hosting other full-week summer camps; holding summer feeding programs and collections of food for the local food pantry, the Northside Common Ministries; and partnering with UPMC to house a community health worker, who offers health services to the community and other various monitoring, screening, and nutritional services to members of the church and surrounding community; and,

WHEREAS, In an effort to affect change for the betterment of the communities served, Bidwell United Presbyterian Church joined the Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network, which helps the church to be concerned with issues such as, immigration, education, gun violence, land banking, and worke...
