Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh for 4 decades of courage, strength and hope and recognizes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 2014, to be “DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH ” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month , whose intent was to connect battered women's advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and children, evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October 1981 by the National Coalition of Domestic Violence; and,

WHEREAS, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed in October 1987, the same year the nation toll-free hotline was begun and two years before the Legislation was passed by the U.S. Congress marking October as DV Awareness Month ; and,

WHEREAS; founded in 1974, the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh was one of the first six shelters in the United States for battered women and has been on the forefront of the Battered Women's Movement, creating and implementing innovative and effective programming aimed at preventing domestic violence and providing services to domestic violence victims; and,

WHEREAS; the mission of the Women's Center and Shelter is to advance the safety and well- being of victims of intimate partner violence and prevent and respond to intimate partner violence through social change. Today, the Women's Center and Shelter provides high quality, confidential and free programs offered in an environment where cultural competency, justice, autonomy, restoration and safety are priorities. The WC&S serves nearly 7000 individuals a year; and,

WHEREAS, the Women's Center and Shelter is part of a large network of domestic violence services in the Pittsburgh region that includes other shelters, awareness and educational groups , Standing Firm who focuses on partner violence in the workplace and the statewide policy group, the PA Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
