Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Alzheimer's Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter for its dedicated work for people affected by Alzheimer's and related dementias and support for families and caregivers; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, October 11, 2014, to be “Walk to End Alzheimer's Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter will be hosting the “Walk to End Alzheimer's” to be held Saturday, October 11 at Heinz Field in the North Shore; and,

WHEREAS, the annual walk is the largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research and is held in more than 600 communities nationwide; and,

WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is a fatal progressive brain disorder that destroys brain cells leading to mild memory loss and advances to individuals losing their ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment; and,

WHEREAS, Alzheimer's accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, although there is no current cure, treatments can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for patients and their caregivers while neuroscience research efforts are under way to develop more effective treatments and ways to prevent the disease; and,

WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Association is helping to move these efforts forward by funding scientists who are searching for more answers and new treatments, collaborating with stakeholders, fostering worldwide partnerships among scientists, and raising the visibility of Alzheimer's as a global health challenge; and,

WHEREAS, in addition, all funds raised through Walk to End Alzheimer's furthers the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association and advances their vision of a world without Alzheimer's disease; and,
