WHEREAS, manufacturing is the 3rd largest industry and the 2nd fastest growing industry in Southwestern Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, more than half of high demand manufacturing jobs do not require a 4-year degree but do require advance training; and,
WHEREAS, the average salary in manufacturing is $56,328 for Southwestern Pennsylvania, which is 20% higher than the overall average salary; and,
WHEREAS, New Century Careers, established in 1999 as a nonprofit organization and based in the city's South Side Flats, provides machining classes, National Tooling and Machining Association apprenticeships, incumbent worker training, and the BotsIQ Youth Pipeline program to Southwestern Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, New Century Careers offers continuous workforce education and training that helps pre-employment and incumbent manufacturing workers and their current and future employers to advance economically, having, since its inception, trained over 4,000 local workers; and,
WHEREAS, New Century Careers joins National Manufacturing Day in raising awareness of American Manufacturing between September 29th and October 3rd by holding an open house on Wednesday October 1, 2014 from 10:00am until 2:00pm; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor New Century Careers for their 15 successful years as an organization and for all of their accomplishments in preparing our residents for successful careers in manufacturing; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, September 30th 2014 to be New Century Careers day in the City of Pittsburgh.
