Title: THEREFORE, be it resolved that The Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby proclaims August 16-23, 2014 as a National Week of Non-Violence

WHEREAS, Black Women for Positive Change, a national civic network, has recognized that it is time to change the culture of violence in America, and the group has recognized that gun violence, physical violence and abuse of all kinds must be stopped before this violence destroys the fabric of our society; and,
WHEREAS, the historic legacy of violence in America has created a national obsession with violence, impacting every person in our culture at every point of our culture, from film and television to news and video games, and, threatening our national security and the safety of children, youth, adults, seniors and families; and,
WHEREAS, violence is necessary for national security and law enforcement goals, our nation desperately needs knowledge and training regarding conflict resolution, mental health, parenting skills and nonviolence; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and President Nelson Mandela demonstrated leadership in nonviolence and called for peaceful resolution to conflict and disagreement in order to create more fair and just societies and,
WHEREAS, Black Women for Positive Change (BW4PC), a national civic, volunteer organization  is calling for a "National Week of Non-Violence," August 16-23, 2014; and urging leaders to organize events to teach nonviolence skills in collaboration with elected officials, faith-based leaders, business leaders, national organizations, educators, musicians, rappers, athletes and community leaders from August 16-23, 2014, and,
WHEREAS, all Americans are encouraged to organize community-based events that teach non-violence, conflict resolution, parenting and promote viewership of the youth violence-prevention film produced by BW4PC called "On 2nd Thought" available at www.blackwomenforpositivechange.org
