WHEREAS, Dr. Morris Turner, who served as a member of the Gateway Medical Society, was a champion for obstetrics and gynecology healthcare for the region by advocating for women in underserved communities and for a woman's right to choice; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Morris is credited as one of the mentors of the Journey to Medicine program which is the Future Physicians Program for Young African American Boys; and,
WHEREAS, born and raised in Barney, Georgia, Dr. Morris attended and graduated from Morehouse College in 1969 with degrees in biology and chemistry, and would go further on to study at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; and,
WHEREAS, after completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Magee Women's Hospital in 1976, Dr. Morris subsequently entered private practice with Dr. Robert G. Kisner in Pittsburgh with whom he practiced for 26 years, and in 2002 would later join the full time faculty of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Morris had an avid passion for the sport of Tennis, he also served as president of the Gateway Medical Society and President of the medical staff at Magee Women's Hospital, as well as serving as a member of the Board of Directors of Magee Women's Hospital, the Allegheny County Medical Society and Primary Care Health Services, and as an active member of the admissions committee for the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh for 16 years; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Turner on June 30, 2014, at the age of 65, as he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Verena Turner, and his 4 children and 6 grandchildren.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 15, 2014 to be "Dr. Morris Turner Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
