Title: BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, July 29, 2014 as “Mark Nordenberg Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Mark Nordenberg first arrived in Pittsburgh as a high school senior when his father was transferred here by U.S. Steel; and,

WHEREAS, an honors graduate of both Thiel College and the University of Wisconsin Law School, Mr. Nordenberg began his career in private practice, but quickly realized that he was, first and foremost, an educator; a decision that would see him return to his beloved Pittsburgh to join the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1977; and,

WHEREAS, after earning a well-deserved reputation as a respected faculty member, a scholar, and administrator, Mr. Nordenberg was named Dean of the University of Pittsburgh Law School, a position he held for eight years; in 1995, he was named Interim Chancellor, and in 1996 was elected the 17th Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, during Chancellor Nordenberg's nineteen year tenure, the University of Pittsburgh has grown to become one of the nation's premier research institutions, generating more than $9.5 billion of research support to the region; and,

WHEREAS, under Chancellor Nordenberg, the University attracted record levels of philanthropic support, drastically improved its standing in national academic rankings, and oversaw the construction of new, state of the art facilities throughout the Oakland campus, other city neighborhoods, and the University's four regional campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, and Titusville; and,

WHEREAS, Chancellor Nordenberg forged a strong partnership with neighboring Carnegie Mellon University, and the two have collaborated on a wide range of economic development, education, and technology initiatives such as the Pittsburgh Digital Greenhouse, Pittsburgh Robotics Foundry, and the Technology Collaborative, further solidifying Pittsburgh's standing as a world-class leader in technological research; and,

WHEREAS, Chancellor Nordenberg has been honored with numerous...
