WHEREAS, since 1970, East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) has provided direct, hands-on services to the hungry, the homeless, the elderly, and the at-risk children and youth living in Pittsburgh's economically distressed East End neighborhoods; and,
WHEREAS, East End Cooperative Ministry was founded as a collective response to changes in the community, born when the leaders of eighteen local faith communities recognized that the troubles of the community were too great for any one of them to address alone; and,
WHEREAS, for many of the individuals it serves, EECM provides the necessities of life: a hot meal, a safe place to sleep, food for the family; for others, it is a place to regain strength after a hospital stay, a support system to work toward recovery, or one-on-one help to change life for the better; and,
WHEREAS, after 18 years of selfless, visionary leadership of EECM, Myrna Zelenitz is retiring as Executive Director of this critical organization; and,
WHEREAS, Myrna was one of the most - if not the most - pivotal players in making Community House a reality; a building that already has and will continue to revolutionize the way EECM operates; and,
WHEREAS, Myrna's truly tireless efforts created a place in our community that is marked with dignity and respect for all people - from those who can give the most to those who need the most; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Myrna Zelenitz for making remarkable differences in the quality and care of services to the hungry, the homeless, the elderly, and the at-risk children and youth living in Pittsburgh's economically distressed East End neighborhoods; and,
