Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize both Shirley Gleditsch and the staff and supporters of the East End Community Thrift Store for their lasting contributions to the local, regional, and global community; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim May 22, 2014, as “Shirley Gleditsch Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the East End Community Thrift Store, run entirely by a dedicated group of volunteers, has made lasting contributions to the community by providing and maintaining a voucher-program to allow those in need to receive necessary items at no cost; and,
 
WHEREAS, Shirley Gleditsch is the Manager for East End Community Thrift Store, and an active member at the Thomas Merton Center, where she has served on the Board of Directors and as an interim Acting Director; and,
 
WHEREAS, a part of the Thomas Merton Center, the East End Community Thrift Store was founded in 1993 by Shirley Gleditsch and Kathleen Conologue, and is dedicated to providing low-cost clothing and household goods to those in need around the area; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Thomas Merton Center, founded in 1972, acts as a local grassroots organization seeking to educate and raise awareness about important social justice, human rights, peace and nonviolence, and economic issues; and,
 
WHEREAS, Shirley Gleditsch, through the East End Community Thrift Store and its volunteers and supporters has sought to provide the Thomas Merton Center with a reliable income to sustain its activities throughout the region; and,
 
WHEREAS, Shirley Gleditsch and the East End Community Thrift Store volunteers will be honored on May 22, 2014 with the New Persons Award through the Thomas Merton Center; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize both Shirley Gleditsch and the staff and supporters of the East End Community Thrift Store for their lasting contributions to the local, regional, and global community; and,
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim May 22, 2014, as "Shirley Gleditsch Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
