body
WHEREAS,  the wedding of David Kail, formerly of Squirrel Hill, to Helen in 1936, and the subsequent marriage of his brother Joseph to her sister Martha  in 1946 and their choice to create a single household, marked the beginnings of a unique American family that originally resided on Wiley Avenue and later moved to "the house" on Fifth Avenue; and,

WHEREAS, their subsequent joint household eventually comprised the four parents, ten children, two aunts, and a grandfather, essentially providing a successful model for what is becoming the contemporary American multi-generational, extended family; and,

WHEREAS,  because of the values cherished by this family and instilled in the generations of this unique American family, an almost unparalleled variety and amount of service has been provided by the family to the Greater Pittsburgh Area, helping to make it the most livable city: and,
WHEREAS,  the surviving Matriarch of the family, Martha Kail, remains at the age of 92, a model of grace, wit, charm, compassion, patience and commitment to her own family, as well as to her church, her community, and a broad range of members of the family by choice;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby acknowledge and commend Martha Kail on Mother's Day, for the family she helped to create, for the community service she helped to inspire, and for the model of family values in the best sense that she remains to this day;
