Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, May 13, 2014 to be “The University of Pittsburgh Asthma Institute of UPMC Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

Whereas, asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that inflames and narrows the airways, often causing wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and/or coughing. Affecting people of all ages, Asthma often starts during childhood. In the Unites States, more than 25 million people are known to have asthma, and 7 million of these people are children; and,
Whereas, the University of Pittsburgh Asthma Institute of UPMC, was founded in 2009 and is led by Drs. Sally Wenzel and Fernando Holguin who are internationally and nationally recognized for their work in asthma. The Asthma Institute is one of the largest and most comprehensive asthma programs in the country; and,
Whereas, the mission of the Asthma Institute is to better understand asthma across all ages, in order to improve the treatment of asthma with the ultimate goal of improving the health and wellness of all asthmatics; and,
Whereas, the Asthma Institute has recognized that the African American population is disproportionately afflicted with asthma, and is currently working on a series of clinical studies that will assist in addressing and reducing the disparities; and,
Whereas, Drs. Wenzel and Holguin have recognized the need for better methods of treatment, and with the help of Jackie Dixon, former Director of Government Relations for Giant Eagle, hopes to successfully recruit adult and children asthmatics for the clinical study through a thorough campaign of support and community outreach; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, commends the important and life changing work done by the University of Pittsburgh Asthma Institute of UPMC, and acknowledges the importance of raising awareness of asthma in order to promote better health for our city and its communities; and,
