Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh celebrates the achievements of the team for winning the 2014 Pittsburgh Class B Diocesan Girls' Basketball Championship and does hereby proclaim April 29th, 2014 to be “Brookline Regional Catholic Girls' Junior Varsity Basketball Day” in the City of Pittsburgh; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh celebrates the outstanding athletic achievements of coaches Ian Barrett and Mark Bernotas and team members Vanessa Hudson, Amanda Santora, Sarah Merlina, Sydney Carr, Alexia Bernotas, Maleah Neiport, Gianna Facchiano, Kendall Calanish, Emily Meador, Samantha Chatham, and Maggie Wilson.

WHEREAS, since 1996, Brookline Regional Catholic School (BRC) has provided a faith-based education to students from the surrounding parishes of St. Pius, Church of the Resurrection, and Our Lady of Loreto, as well as the surrounding areas; and

WHEREAS, the long-standing tradition of basketball at Church of the Resurrection and Our Lady of Loreto is quite legendary, with these schools producing numerous diocesan and state champions, as well as Olympic gold medalist and Brookline icon, Suzie McConnell-Serio; and

WHEREAS, since the school's 1996 merger, no Brookline Regional Catholic team in any sport has won a diocesan championship, until this year; the 2014 BRC girls' junior varsity basketball team swept through the competition and finished as the first undefeated Class B diocesan champion ever in their school's history; and

WHEREAS, aside from sweeping their section against opponents such as St. Anne's, Madonna Regional Catholic, JFK, Holy Child and St. Sylvester's, this team played a rigorous non-section schedule against Class A diocesan as well as larger public schools teams; and

WHEREAS, Brookline Regional Catholic obtained wins over Holy Trinity, St. Bernard's, Bethel Park, West Mifflin, perennial powerhouse St. Gabriel's, and also the eventual Class A diocesan champion St. Bonaventure, setting a positive example of excellence for all local athletes and providing further evidence that this truly is the City of Champions.
