Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 29, 2014 to be “Brenda Tate Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Officer Brenda Tate, a lifelong resident of the Hill District, mother of two sons and a proud grandmother, served in the law enforcement field for 35 years as a veteran of the City of Pittsburgh Police Department, before retiring from the Police Department on March 31, 2014; and,

WHEREAS, Prior to joining the Pittsburgh Police Bureau in April 23, 1979, she was one of the first female officers to serve on foot patrol for the Pittsburgh Housing Authority Police Department; and,

WHEREAS, Officer Tate is a natural leader, sitting on several boards including the YMCA, Hill House Association, Ebenezer Development Corporation, Hill District Community Development Corporation, and Urban Pathway Charter School, as well as serving as a member of civic and community organizations including the NAACP, the Urban League, Coro Center for Civic Leadership/Women, Boy Scout Troop 59, and the New Dawn Ministry “Winner in You” program; and,

WHEREAS, the recipient of many honors, in 2001 Officer Tate received the “Woman of Influence” award from the Pittsburgh Courier, and in 2002 she was awarded the “Volunteer of the Year” award from the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives; and,

WHEREAS, from 1994 to 2004 Officer Tate served in the high profile Dignitary and Witness Protection Unit responsible for providing protective services for high profile Dignitaries such as kings, queens, US presidents and vice presidents, and other royalty from abroad; and,

WHEREAS, in 2004 Officer Tate returned to the Zone 2 Station and worked beat and patrol assignments to provide hill district residents with her unique style of community-policing service, and in 2007 she returned to the Investigations Bureau to work in Witness Protection to provide temporary and permanent relocation and security to material witnesses and victims who testified against violent criminals; and,
