Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the American Cancer Society's Greater Pittsburgh Unit for the determination to fight and find cures for all those who are dealing with cancer and we encourage all citizens of Pittsburgh to join a Relay for Life event; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, April 8, 2014, to be "Relay for Life Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society provides valuable resources in Pittsburgh such as helping people live a healthy lifestyle, make decisions about care, and providing free transportation services to cancer treatments, just to name a few; and,
 
WHEREAS, in the year 2014, it is estimated that cancer will strike approximately 79,560 people in the state of Pennsylvania alone and it remains the second most common cause of death in the United States accounting for nearly 1 in 4 deaths; and,
 
WHEREAS, American Cancer Society Relay for Life events is a family-friendly environment consisting of participants who camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park or fairground during a 24 hour period to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against cancer; and,
 
WHEREAS, since May of 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington raising $27,000 for the American Cancer Society, the Relay for Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon raising nearly 5 billion dollars to fight cancer; and,
