WHEREAS, the life and work of Sylvia Robinson, currently a Supervisor in the Department of Personnel and Civil Service, has proven to be an example of hard work and dedication; and
WHEREAS, Sylvia Robinson has worked for the City of Pittsburgh for thirty-six years, having worked her way through the ranks, starting as a Clerical Typist, and becoming the Supervisor of Applications and Records in the Department of Personnel and Civil Service; and
WHEREAS, becoming one of the cornerstones for the Department of Personnel and Civil Service, Sylvia has been hailed as one of the few irreplaceable employees, receiving the 1998 Mayor's Award for Employee Excellence, and holds the “institutional knowledge” that will truly be missed; and
WHEREAS, Sylvia was able to help break down racial segregation barriers in the City of Pittsburgh by becoming one of the first Black waitresses at the Tea Room restaurant in Joseph Horne's Company Department Store; and
WHEREAS, as a dedicated single parent, Sylvia wanted her son and daughter to understand that education, hard work and self-confidence was very important. Sylvia worked tirelessly with her children's grade school to help institute, along with three other school mothers, the Parent Teacher's League (PTL), and when it came time for college, without hesitation, Sylvia took on a second job to help with tuition; and
WHEREAS, Sylvia Robinson is a lifelong resident of the North Side, born and raised in Manchester, and currently lives in the Mexican War Streets. Sylvia attended Conroy Elementary & Junior High School and is a graduate of Allegheny High School; and
WHEREAS, Sylvia cares for her aging mother, Elva, and visits her father, Bill, who resides in Sun City, Arizona. Sylvia is the proud mother of her son Dana and daughter Ashley, and loving grandmother of Jarod, Caleb, Rachel, Amariah and Judah; and
