WHEREAS, multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease of the central nervous system, with someone being diagnosed every hour and affecting 2.3 million people worldwide ; and,
WHEREAS, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Western PA Chapter reports that in our state more than 28,000 people have been diagnosed with MS, striking people in the prime of life, between the ages 20 through 50 and causing unpredictable effects in which the progression, severity and specific symptoms cannot be foreseen ; and,
WHEREAS, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Western PA Chapter has been committed for more than 67 years to a world free of MS, heightening public knowledge about and insight into the disease and becoming a driving force since 1946 in MS research, prevention, treatment and a cure; and,
WHEREAS, funds raised through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society fuel the efforts of nearly 325 projects globally totaling 40 million dollars annually at the best medical centers, universities and other institutions throughout the United States and abroad, making the research more hopeful than ever before .

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the importance of finding the cause and cure for MS, a chronic and devastating disease, and expresses its appreciation and admiration to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Western PA Chapter for its dedication toward a future free of MS; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare March 3-10, 2014 to be "MS AWARENESS WEEK" in the City of Pittsburgh.
