WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Playwrights Theater Company was founded by Mark Clayton Southers in 2003, beginning as the resident company of Garfield's Penn Theater and ultimately moving into the penthouse at 937 Liberty Avenue ; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of the Pittsburgh Playwrights Theater Company is to develop and showcase the works of local playwrights from accomplished masters like August Wilson and George S. Kaufman to promising new talents, to nurture a racially and culturally diverse community of playwrights, directors, actors and technical specialists, to support a racially and culturally diverse management staff and board of directors who promote audiences that reflect the rich variety of the Pittsburgh community ; and,
WHEREAS, the third production of the PPT 2013-2014 season is "THE GREAT ONE", a play by Russ Babines and directed by Mark Clayton Southers which signifies the unique community spirit of Pittsburgh. It is a nostalgic piece combining elements of "The Sandlot", "Stand By Me" and "A Christmas Story" that uses references to the Pirates and Roberto Clemente as devices to move the story forward. Its title has many meanings and refers to those who have had an impact on our lives; and,
WHEREAS, "THE GREAT ONE" will run from February 21- March 15, 2014 ; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Russ Babines for a story that is uniquely Pittsburgh and recognizes Mark Clayton Southers for his vision, leadership and determination to make the Pittsburgh Playwrights Company an asset for the City of Pittsburgh.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, , that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, February 21, 2014, to be " PITTSBURGH PLAYWRIGHTS THEATER COMPANY DAY " in the City of Pittsburgh.
