Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the life and death of Marcus L. White Jr., whose untimely passing shall serve to remind us all of our duty to protect families and children from the cancer of gun violence with the hopes of preventing any further loss of innocent lives as a result of these senseless acts of inhumanity; and, NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, February 18, 2014 to be “Marcus Lamont White Jr. Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Marcus L. White, Jr., son of Marcus L. White and Jameela Tyler, was born on the 19th day of February, 2012; and,

WHEREAS, Wednesday, February 19, 2014 will not be a celebration of Marcus' 2nd birthday, but will instead serve as a remembrance of his life and a reminder to us all of our duty to protect our children and to fight for their right to live peacefully within safe neighborhoods, free of gun violence; and,

WHEREAS, Marcus Jr., an energetic 15-month-old baby who loved music and dancing, was gunned down on May 21, 2013 in broad daylight while attending a cookout with two of his aunts in Pittsburgh's East Hills neighborhood; and,

WHEREAS, no witness to his murder has yet to come forward to provide any evidence and, as a result, no arrests have been made in his case; and,

WHEREAS, the story of Marcus' brutal murder has galvanized communities throughout Allegheny County, contributing to a series of rallies that have brought hundreds of people together to call upon those with information to step forward, speak out, and bring those responsible for the killing of Marcus Jr. to justice; and,

WHEREAS, the “Justice for Baby Marcus” movement is designed to encompass the entire Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area, building relationships with communities, local business establishments, nonprofits, and police departments to fight for safer streets and cooperation amongst all people in realizing our moral obligation to bring unsolved murders to justice; and,
