Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Michael Carruth for his accolades and continued commitment to the advancement of youth; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does recognize the efforts of the three aforementioned Pittsburgh nonprofits and wishes them great success in hosting The Donnybrook: Ambassador's Cup.

WHEREAS, on Monday March 17th, 2014 three area Pittsburgh nonprofits will come together to host The Donnybrook: Ambassador's Cup to celebrate Pittsburgh's Irish boxing history and raise funds towards future programming serving Pittsburgh area youth. The Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League, Hibernian Celtic Athletic Fund have come together to plan, organize and execute a “Donnybrook” in Pittsburgh's Grand Hall at the Priory, on the North Side; and,

WHEREAS, Donnybrook Fair was a fair that was held in Donnybrook, Dublin from the 13th century through the 1850s. It has now given its name to an Irish jig, an upmarket supermarket chain, a ballad, and is now often used as a slang term for a brawl or riot. The Ambassador's Cup will seek to create Pittsburgh's own Donnybrook in which two teams of Amateur boxers will square off, Team Pittsburgh vs. Team Ireland, for the Ambassador's Cup trophy; and,

WHEREAS, in an effort to promote the event, there will be a Pittsburgh Donnybrook Ambassador's Cup Bar/Pub Tour with special guest Michael Carruth, Ireland's Olympic Boxing Gold Medalist, and coach of Team Ireland. The tour bus will embark on a series of visits to local bars and pubs in Pittsburgh such as Church Brew Works, Piper's Pub, Pennsbury Pub and many other reputable establishments throughout the city; and,

WHEREAS, born on July 9th, 1967 in Dublin, Ireland, Michael Carruth, a south paw Irish Olympic boxer from Dublin is best known for winning the welterweight gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. A celebrated Irishman, he secured the first Olympic gold medal for Ireland since 1956. Mr. Carruth is associated with the Drimnagh Boxing Club in Dublin, Ireland which was founded in 1965 to cater to the youth of the Drimnagh/North Crumlin area.
