Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Holocaust Center of Greater Pittsburgh for its tireless work on Holocaust awareness and commends and congratulates the Community Foundation of Western PA and Eastern OH for its commitment to educate future generations on the Holocaust; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, January 27, 2014, to be “UNITED NATION'S HOLOCAUST REMEMBERANCE DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Holocaust Center of Greater Pittsburgh is Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and Northern West Virginia's only educational resource center on the Holocaust and whose mission is to heighten public awareness and honor survivors by utilizing the events of the Jewish Holocaust experience as a means to teach tolerance to middle and high school students. The Holocaust Center also engages the community and collaborates with other organizations, individuals and institutions around programming and conversations as to the contemporary relevance of the Holocaust; and,

WHEREAS, the Smith Fund of the Community Foundation of Western PA and Eastern OH has developed a multi-media exhibit on the Holocaust titled Lest We Forget which is being used to promote Holocaust awareness in high schools in Lawrence and Mercer Counties; and,

WHEREAS, in addition, the Community Foundation and Holocaust Center of Greater Pittsburgh are engaged in collaborative projects on the Holocaust including the collection of 6,000,000 pennies representing the 6,000,000 lives lost in the Holocaust; and,

WHEREAS, the Community Foundation will be holding a press conference on January 27, 2014, at the Warhol Museum where the exhibit will be displayed in honor of UN Holocaust Remembrance Day; and

WHEREAS, Holocaust Remembrance Day was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2005, was designed to remember the victims of the Holocaust and honor those who stood up against it and marks the actual date when the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated.
