Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Alyce Johnston's strength of character, selfless devotion and service to others, and thanks her for her warmth of spirit and demonstrable compassion, and, further, does hereby wish Alyce a very happy 93rd birthday; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, November 2nd, 2013 “Alyce Johnston Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Forbes Hospice is the oldest non-profit hospice and palliative care program in the Pittsburgh region, providing comfort to countless patients and their families during one of life's most difficult stages; and

WHEREAS, Forbes Hospice relies on support from the greater Pittsburgh community, including the work of a number of community members who donate their time to volunteer at the hospice, helping to care for patients, working with families, and helping in countless other ways; and

WHEREAS, one of the most dedicated of these volunteers, Alyce Johnston of Oakland, is, at 93 years old, one of Forbes Hospice's most valued, kind, and loved fixtures, voluntarily devoting her time to the Hospice, its patients, and their families; and

WHEREAS, Alyce has volunteered at Forbes Hospice since 2006, having retired from a long career with ALCOA, where she worked as an Executive Assistant; and

WHEREAS, Alyce Johnston's work at the Hospice includes meeting and greeting patients, families, and guests of the Hospice, tending to their needs, and comforting them with her famously caring and warm demeanor; and

WHEREAS, Alyce personally arranges the daily flower displays, while also delivering the displays to patients, always taking the time to learn about each patient and their family in the process; and

WHEREAS, common words used by patients, families, and hospice staff to describe Alyce include: “warm, generous, elegant, caring, considerate and helpful,” descriptors that only begin to scratch the surface of Alyce's devotion to the care of others; and

WHEREAS, in Alyce's words, “Our time here is not only the kindness and needs we share, it is also those wonderful men and women with whom we share our time with as a beautiful reflection of each other;”
