WHEREAS, the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition is celebrating its 41th year as a non-profit community group dedicated to preserving and improving the quality of life in the 14th Ward of the City of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, in it's 41th year, members of the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition continue to provide leadership to the community by studying, debating and advocating positions on issues affecting the neighborhood's vitality reflected through a long range planning process which fosters community-based-initiatives in housing, education, transportation, commercial, residential and institutional development and parks and open spaces; and,
WHEREAS, the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition is hosting its second annual Squirrel Hill Treasures Dinner & Celebration on Thursday, October 17, 2013, to honor three outstanding citizens who contribute to the vitality of the neighborhood and who best represent the goals of the organization, and to honor one location that embodies Squirrel Hill's vibrancy and diversity; and,
WHEREAS, Treasure Karla Boos is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Quantum Theater which creates adventurous productions of contemporary theater from around the world and stages updated classics in innovative performance sites all over the city. Karla has won awards locally. is a member of the International Women's Forum and the National Theater Conference and written, directed and appeared in many productions ; and,
WHEREAS, Treasure Wendell G. Freeland, Esq. is an accomplished Pittsburgh attorney, a graduate of Howard University and the University of Maryland where he was the first African American elected to the Order of the Coif. Mr. Freeland was a Bombardier with the Tuskegee Airmen with the 477th Bombardment Group in WW II. Admitted to the Bar in 1951, Mr. Freeland has had a distinguished legal career and was also a Founding Member of the Hill House Association and the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition; and,
