Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby remember and honor the legacy of Michelle Madoff-Scheske's impassioned activism for the health of Pittsburgh's citizens, and does recognize the organization she co-founded, the Group Against Smog and Pollution, and their Athletes United for Healthy Air campaign for their dedication to educating the public and promoting clean air for all; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, October 19, 2013, to be “The Clean Air Dash and Festival Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, while air quality has been steadily improving throughout the Pittsburgh region, we recognize that more work needs to be done to achieve truly clean and healthy air; and,

WHEREAS, the presence of air pollution poses serious health problems for the citizens of Pittsburgh, including aggravating or causing cardiopulmonary disease, cancers, and asthma, with children and seniors being especially susceptible to the effects of poor air quality; and,

WHEREAS, athletes of all kinds and of all ages, from the dog walker to the marathon runner, experience increased exposure to air pollution because they are processing air at a more rapid rate during outdoor physical activity than an individual at rest; and,

WHEREAS, the Group Against Smog and Pollution is a non-profit organization founded in 1969 and actively works to improve air quality to ensure human, environmental, and economic health in Southwestern Pennsylvania; and,

WHEREAS, recognizing the late Michelle Madoff-Scheske as a co-founder of GASP who served admirably as its first president by working actively with community members to bring in the best and brightest engineers to report on how to minimize pollution from steel mills, manufacturing facilities and power plants in the region, and was a tireless and vocal champion for air quality for all of Pittsburgh's residents; and

WHEREAS, the Group Against Smog and Pollution, with the support of the Breathe Project and many community organizations, will hold the inaugural Clean Air Dash and Festival on Saturday, October 19, 2013, at South Side Riverfront Park, and,
