Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Pittsburgh Opera for the rich cultural experience they bring to everyone in our region; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 12, 2013 “Pittsburgh Opera Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Opera was formed in 1939 with the goal of enriching the cultural life in the City of Pittsburgh; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Opera performed The Tales of Hoffman for their official debut on March 10, 1940 at the Carnegie Music Hall of Oakland; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Opera is the seventh oldest opera company in the country and continues to produce a live opera experience at the highest measure of artistic excellence; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist Program is one of the top five training centers for aspiring opera singers in the country and provides space for events ranging from free community Brown Bag concerts to recitals by world-class opera performers; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Opera provides educational resources to more than 20,000 students and 400 teachers annually with a range of engaging programs; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Opera has experienced remarkable leadership stability from Dr. Richard Karp, to Tito Capobianco, to Mark Weinstein, and is currently led by Board Chair Michele Fabrizi, President Clyde B. Jones III and General Director Christopher Hahn; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Opera will open its 75th Anniversary Season with a performance of Verdi's Aida on October 12, 2013.
