Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Billy Porter for his contributions to the performing arts and his representation of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University on the world stage; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 1, 2013 to be “Billy Porter Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Billy Porter, acclaimed Broadway performer and musician, was born and raised in the city of Pittsburgh, growing up in East Liberty; and
WHEREAS, his ties to the community are deep, having attended Reizenstein Middle School, Taylor Alderdice High School, and Pittsburgh School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and earned a degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 1991; and
 
WHEREAS, Porter has gone on to become a celebrated and exalted performer, starring in numerous shows including classics such as Dreamgirls and Jesus Christ Superstar; and
 
WHEREAS, Porter has also released two musical albums, Billy Porter in 1997 and At the Corner of Broadway + Soul in 2005, and has appeared in six films; and
 
WHEREAS, this year Porter has been performing in a rendition of Kinky Boots in which he has taken the role of Lola; and
 
WHEREAS, in recognition of his outstanding performance, Porter was nominated for and won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical; and
 
WHEREAS, he has continued and advanced a long tradition of excellence among Carnegie Mellon alumni in the performing arts, joining eight other alumni as winners at the Tony Awards this year and became one of thirty-one Tony Award winners throughout the history of the university.
