Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Alcoa for revolutionizing the aluminum industry, and for its significant impact on the Pittsburgh region; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 1, 2013 to be “Alcoa Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Alcoa's co-founder, Charles Martin Hall, discovered an affordable way to produce aluminum through electrolysis in 1886 that created the modern aluminum industry; and
 
WHEREAS, to commercialize Hall's discovery, the Pittsburgh Reduction Company, now known as Alcoa, was incorporated on October 1, 1888; and
WHEREAS, Alcoa's innovative solutions have revolutionized its markets from aerospace and automotive, to consumer electronics and packaging; and
 
WHEREAS, Alcoa's leadership in sustainability and recycling has resulted in recognition as one of the Top Green Companies by BusinessWeek Magazine and being featured in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 11 consecutive years; and
 
WHEREAS, Alcoa has partnered with its communities and invested more than $550 million through the Alcoa Foundation since it was founded in 1952; and
 
WHEREAS, Alcoa employs nearly seven hundred employees in the City of Pittsburgh and nearly 2,000 in the greater Pittsburgh area, many of whom work in the Alcoa Corporate Center on Pittsburgh's Northside; and
 
WHEREAS, Alcoa has maintained its Corporate Headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for One Hundred and Twenty-five Years;
