Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the After School Academy Program at Pittsburgh Langley K-8 for the enrichment opportunities provided to our youth; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Wednesday, September 4, 2013, to be “After School Academy Appreciation Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the After School Academy at Pittsburgh Langley K-8, in partnership with the Community Enrichment Program of the Department of Parks and Recreation serves middle school students in this Title 1 school that is implementing the Pittsburgh Public School's goal of preparing 80% of its students to graduate from college or complete a workforce certification program by implementing “Promise Ready” after school enrichment programs; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh Community Enrichment Program has an ongoing relationship with the Pittsburgh Public Schools and has provided seamless and effective in-school, after school and summer school programs that utilizes the City's resources to provide enrichment classes and field trips in a wide variety of educational, cultural, artistic and sports related disciplines that include Citiparks Tennis and Aquatics; and,

WHEREAS, the After School Academy is setting a high standard of student success and has allowed students to gain new knowledge, skills and interests with enrichment classes that are hands on, creative, skill-based and fun; and,

WHEREAS, the After School Academy at Pittsburgh Langley in partnership with Citiparks has repurposed the Pittsburgh Langley K-8 Culinary Suite and Greenhouse and aided in the creation of the Office of Neighborhood Initiatives “Edible Garden” for After School Academy enrichment classes in cooking and gardening that follow the current trends in culinary and urban gardening philosophies while offering skill-based classes; and,

WHEREAS, the Community Enrichment Program, a Division of the Community Services Department of Parks and Recreation led by Nancy Burns and her staff Leona Frankowski and Cynthia Wiegel along with Pittsburgh Langley K-8 Principal Rodney Necciai, teachers, staff and students are committed to improving the quality of life for all Sheraden and West End families through After School Academy Service Learning enrichment opportunit...
