Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition - Pittsburgh Chapter - for their commitment and diligence in educating the community on early detection and treatment of ovarian cancer and congratulates the Chapter on their successful Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, , that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September 2013, to be “ OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the mission of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition is to raise awareness and promote education about ovarian cancer. The Coalition is committed to improving the survival rate and quality of life for women with ovarian cancer ; and,
 
WHEREAS, the NOCC-Pittsburgh Chapter was formed in 2000 by Karen Bowers, Julene Fabrizio and Carolyn Gardner who met while undergoing treatment and even though the three women lost their fight, their legacy lives on in the Pittsburgh region; and,
 
WHEREAS, more than 20,000 women … 1 in 71… are diagnosed each year with ovarian cancer and Pennsylvania ranks #5 in the nation for most ovarian cancer deaths with 810 in 2012. Currently, there are no early detection tests for the disease and so awareness and education are the most important tools for detection and early treatment; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Chapter of NOCC will be holding its 13th Annual Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the North Park Boathouse from 12 Noon to 4PM. Runners and walkers of all ages and all levels are invited; and,
