Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend East Liberty Valley Historical Society; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare August 16-31, 2013 , to be “East Liberty Valley Historical Society Days” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, East Liberty has a very rich and intriguing history; the East Liberty Valley Historical Society a non-profit organization was formed in 2002 to preserve the unique history of this area and encourage community esteem, thereby fostering economic growth and development. In its “golden era” in the 1940s and 1950s, East Liberty exemplified a vibrant commercial center and a tight-knit residential community; and,

WHEREAS, the Society issued a book in 2008 published by Arcadia Publishing entitled Pittsburgh's East Liberty Valley. This book tells the story of early pioneer days, which included the Shadyside Iron Furnace and continues through the Industrial Revolution. East Liberty Valley was the center of promoters and inventors of iron and steel, oil, manufacturing, air brakes, and aluminum production. Businesses in East Liberty included the National Biscuit Company, Isaly's Stagno's Bakers and the First Sears & Roebuck Company store in Pittsburgh. The Salvation Army was joined by other nonprofits including the Boy Scouts, the YMCA and YWCA, and Kingsley House. Other notables are Carnegie, Frick, Armstrong, Mellon, Heinz, Scaife, Westinghouse, McCune, Lockhart, Phipps, and Hunt, they all lived in East Liberty; and,

WHEREAS, during the week of August 16-31, 2013, the East Liberty Valley Historical Society will hold a Retrospective Historical Exhibition. The exhibition will include rare portraits of prominent East Liberty residents of the past, an antique auto display, first editions of books by East Liberty authors, and many other unique artifacts dating as far back as pre-historic ages. The exhibition is free and open to the Public, with an opening night reception on Friday, August 16, 2013 from 6-9PM. The exhibition is co-sponsored by the East Liberty Valley Historic Society, the East Liberty Quarter Chamber of Commerce; and,
