WHEREAS, Ernest Roman, a resident of the Spring Hill neighborhood on Pittsburgh's Northside, has lived a life of hard work and service, and inspired those around him; and
WHEREAS, Ernie served in the Vietnam War until he stepped on a landmine, and spent 19 months in a hospital, where he served as a mentor for other wounded warriors; and
WHEREAS, Ernie was later awarded the prestigious Purple Heart Award from the U.S. Armed Services for the sacrifices that he made for his country; and
WHEREAS, Ernie began his career with the City of Pittsburgh working for the Bureau of Fire as the first ever civilian dispatcher in 1974, before moving on to work for the Department of Public Works, the Bureau of Police, and the Department of Public Safety; and
WHEREAS, after 30 years of service to the City of Pittsburgh, Ernie was transferred to Allegheny County in 2005 to become the Shift Commander for the 911 center; and
WHEREAS, Ernie has been praised by his colleagues for his professionalism and for always
maintaining his composure, even in the most chaotic emergency situations; and
WHEREAS, long before GPS was invented, Ernie memorized the locations of countless city streets in Pittsburgh and could dispatch emergency vehicles in a flash, saving countless lives with his quick and efficient work; and
WHEREAS, Ernie served on the board of the Spring Hill Civic League for years in the 1980s, taking great pride in the community he so loved, and was known for having the best manicured yard in the entire City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Ernie is an active member of the American Legion #565, and long-time member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), an organization dedicated to helping wounded veterans and their families; and
WHEREAS, Ernie retired from his decades of fantastic public service on July 4, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Ernie is most of all a loving husband to his wife Mary, and father of two wonderful daughters, Natalie and Krista;
