Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the University of Pittsburgh for their integral involvement with the City of Pittsburgh on a local and national stage and for their exciting move to compete in the ACC; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 25, 2013 to be “University of Pittsburgh Athletics Atlantic Coast Conference Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, with over 255 years of building better lives, the University of Pittsburgh (“Pitt”) is among our nation's oldest and most distinguished universities; and

WHEREAS, Pitt Football has claimed nine national championships and is among the top 25 college football programs in all-time wins; the Pitt team has competed as a member of the Big East Conference since 1991 and has now accepted an invitation to join the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) beginning July 1, 2013; and

WHEREAS, the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics seeks to be a source of pride of the University, the City of Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and strives to successfully compete at the highest level of Division-I-A Athletics and to be the best athletics program in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC); and

WHEREAS, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has long enjoyed a reputation for being one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate athletic conferences in the nation and its member institutions achieve the conference's primary goal of academic and athletic excellence focusing on the total development of the student-athlete and adhering to the principles of integrity and sportsmanship; and

WHEREAS, the move to the ACC not only positions the University's athletic teams for greater success and provides greater opportunities for academic collaboration with ACC universities, but it also represents an opportunity to showcase the University and City of Pittsburgh on a national stage.
