WHEREAS, Dr. Mary Hines, President of Carlow University, has actively served in the community for years contributing to groups as diverse as the Southwestern Pennsylvania Economy League to the International Women's forum; and
WHEREAS, Hines has served a model of empowerment for women everywhere working tirelessly to ensure they have leadership and education opportunities; and
WHEREAS, Hines has in the eight years she's held the position of president strived both to improve the university but also to maintain its Catholic roots; and
WHEREAS, under Hines' leadership Carlow's has expanded its degree and class offerings which now include a masters in Fraud and Forensics; and
WHEREAS, Hines has encouraged the ASB program, a program that sends students on their spring break to volunteer in needed areas across the country; and
WHEREAS, under Hines the university's non traditional students program has been singled out for recognition by the American college personnel association; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hines will step down as president of the university on July 31st; and Suzanne K. Mellon will be stepping in as the new president,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Dr. Mary Hines for her contributions to both Carlow University and the city; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 19, 2013 to be "Dr. Mary Hines Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
