Title: THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does recognize and congratulate WPTS for its ranking by MTV and MTVu as one of the top-5 college radio stations in the United States, as well as for the station's impact in providing the Pittsburgh community with quality progressive music, news, and sports programming, while also serving as an essential classroom environment equipping University of Pittsburgh student interested in careers in broadcast, communications, journalism, marketing, and organizational management with vital hands on experience; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, May 28th 2013 “92.1 WPTS Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, WPTS-FM, known as “Pittsburgh's Progressive FM” is an educational, non-commercial radio station owned by the University of Pittsburgh, and is fully operated and managed by University of Pittsburgh students; and,

WHEREAS, WPTS appeared on the FM radio dial in 1984, having formerly been carried on the AM dial as WPGH, a station whose establishment grew out of efforts undertaken by a University of Pittsburgh student group known as the Student Broadcasting Association, formed in 1957 by Adrian Cronauer, whose experiences in the Vietnam War would serve as the inspiration for the film Good Morning Vietnam; and,

WHEREAS, WPTS is governed by an advisory board that hires one University of Pittsburgh student to serve as Station Manager each year, who, in turn, hires a board of 11 student directors to manage each department within the station; and,

WHEREAS, in addition to these hired student directors, WPTS serves as a working classroom for over 100 University of Pittsburgh students who volunteer as DJs, or on various educational staffs, such as engineering, promotions, programming, or digital marketing; and,

WHEREAS, WPTS has provided University of Pittsburgh students with hands-on experience in media, broadcasting, organizational management, and marketing, catalyzing the development of its students and launching many WPTS alumni to find post-graduate careers in journalism, communications, media, broadcast, and the commercial music industry; and,

WHEREAS, in spring of 2013, WPTS was, for the second consecutive year, recognized by MTV's MTVu network as one of the top-5 college radio stations in the United States, continuing WPTS's national reputation as one of Pittsburgh's foremost community outlets for student produced independent music, news, and sports programming; and,
