Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Marlo Thomas for her extraordinary commitment to social justice and equality for all Americans and congratulates her for her work on behalf of women, children and families. In addition, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh welcomes Marlo Thomas to the City of Pittsburgh on the occasion of the 120th Anniversary of NCJW; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 30, 2013, to be “ MARLO THOMAS DAY ” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the National Council of Jewish Women is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children and families and safeguarding individual rights and freedoms; and,

WHEREAS, NCJW Pittsburgh Section will be celebrating its 120th Anniversary on May 30, 2013 with an Annual Meeting which will install new officers, award the prestigious Hannah G. Solomon Award and feature Keynote Speaker Marlo Thomas; and,

WHEREAS, Marlo Thomas is an award-winning actress, author and activist whose body of work continues to have an impact on American entertainment and culture. She is best known in the entertainment world for television's “That Girl”, which broke ground for independent women everywhere, for her guest starring role on “Friends” and for her ground-breaking television specials “Free to Be…You and Me” which she created, produced and co-hosted; and,

WHEREAS, Marlo Thomas is also a founding director of the Ms. Foundation for Women, is a member of the boards of the National Women's Political Caucus, the Creative Coalition, the Museum of Television and Radio and is the National Outreach Director for St. Jude's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN which was founded by her father, Danny Thomas in 1962; and,

WHEREAS, Ms. Thomas's continuing social conscience led her to launch a bullying prevention campaign on her website in 2011, and helped spearhead a nationwide anti-bullying initiative with the Ad Council AOL, Facebook and the US Departments of Education and Health and Human Services. Ms. Thomas will speak to the Pittsburgh Section of NCJW on her experiences “Growing Up Laughing” in her parents' celebrity household and how her experiences influenced her to become a feminist, activist and an extraordinary leader.
