WHEREAS, the widespread extinction of 27,000 plant and animal species per year, threatens biodiversity and destroys ecosystems that affect all living things on earth; and
WHEREAS, human activity that leads to the destruction of habitats, and global climate change, is a major cause of species extinction and endangerment; and
WHEREAS, the Endangered Species Action Team, part of the internationally recognized Sierra Club, works to raise awareness about endangerment and extinction, and petitions lawmakers to protect our wildlife at the local and national level; and
WHEREAS, in the Pittsburgh region, the Endangered Species Action Team has worked with the Fish and Game Commission to help protect the endangered Allegheny River mussels, which help keep the river clean, and serve as an important part of the ecosystem; and
WHEREAS, Endangered Species Day celebrated on May 17, is an important reminder that we all must take action to protect our planet's disappearing wildlife, and leave our children and grandchildren with a healthy natural environment;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the Endangered Species Action Team for their dedication to raising awareness and protecting wildlife; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, May 17, 2013, to be "Endangered Species Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
