Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and celebrates the importance of transit to our City and the entire region; and THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, May 9, 2013 to be Transit Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, each morning half of downtown's workforce boards a bus or train to get to their jobs, keeping Pittsburgh's economy humming; and
 
WHEREAS, even those who never ride public transportation benefit from it through reduced time in automobile congestion, less demand for parking, and better air quality; and
 
WHEREAS, public transportation in Pittsburgh and across the state has been impacted by cycles of disinvestment and need a sustainable solution to funding a robust transportation network; and
 
WHEREAS, legislation to fund Pennsylvania's transportation program, including public transportation, is currently being discussed in the Pennsylvania Senate; and
 
WHEREAS, in order to celebrate the importance of transit in our community, GoBurgh, a project of the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group, will be hosting Pittsburgh's first Transit Day to draw attention to the importance of public transportation; and
 
WHEREAS, Transit Day is a project of GoBurgh, partnering with the United Way's Campaign for What Works, the Committee for Accessible Transit, Eat 'n' Park, the Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network, Pittsburghers for Public Transit, and the Pittsburgh Foundation; and
 
WHEREAS, events for Transit Day include coffee provided at busy transit stops and a rally in Market Square at noon to celebrate the role transit plays in the lives of Pittsburghers; and
