Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the NAACP Pittsburgh Unit and Homer S. Brown Award winners Mel Blount, Charlie Batch, and M. Gayle Moss for their dedication to improving the lives of Pittsburgh youth; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday May 2, 2013 “Home S. Brown Award Winners Mel Blount, Charlie Batch, and M. Gayle Moss Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the NAACP's Pittsburgh Unit is celebrating its 59th Annual Human Rights Dinner, honoring the achievements and advancement of African American leaders in Pittsburgh and throughout the United States; and
 
WHEREAS, the theme of this year's dinner is "Reenergize, Refocus, Restructure: Save Our Youth" and calls on all Pittsburghers to do more to engage and uplift the next generation of Pittsburgh leaders; and   
 
WHERAS, the keynote speaker of this year's dinner is an embodiment of those principles; Swin Cash, grew up in McKeesport and went on to become a professional basketball player in the WNBA, an author, a philanthropist, a motivational speaker, and an Olympic champion; and   
 
WHEREAS, three Pittsburgh leaders who have dedicated their lives to the advancement of Pittsburgh youth will receive the Homer S. Brown award at the dinner; and
 
WHEREAS, Mel Blount is a legendary Pittsburgh Steeler who played in four winning Super Bowls and has dedicated himself to helping children through his Youth Homes in Georgia and Pennsylvania; Charlie Batch is another champion Steeler who has worked to improve the lives of thousands of Pittsburgh area youth through his Project CHUCK summer basketball league and his Best of the Batch kids camp, and M. Gayle Moss is former president of the NAACP Pittsburgh Unit and a tireless advocate for Pittsburgh youth.
