WHEREAS, on May 23, 1870, Pittsburgh established a paid Fire Department currently known as the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire and for 42 years have made it their mission to preserve life and property, promote public safety and provide effective services related to fire suppression, first responder medical service, hazardous materials mitigation, emergency management service and preventative services such as the smoke detector program; and,
WHEREAS, on Monday, March 25, 2013, the Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Engine 6, Engine 7, Engine 8, Truck 6 and Truck 8 were involved in an apartment building fire at 305
N. Negley Avenue; and,
WHEREAS, when the engines and trucks involved arrived at the scene, they were faced with occupants hanging out of windows on all four sides of the building due to the fact that the fire broke out in the stairway blocking their only way out, and heavy black smoke coming out above most of the residents; and,
WHEREAS, to make matters worse, the building was positioned on top of a grassy hill which was covered with three to four inches of slippery wet snow; and,
WHEREAS, Firefighters were determined to overcome the obstacles in their way and managed to rescue all of the residents involved without any loss of life or serious injury to the occupants or Firefighters; and,
